@CB, there aren't even any people up there, who is stealing stuff? Also, if you like it, that's great, but Google Music went through a phase where it was sure I wanted to listen to Nathaniel Rateliff, and it turned out I really didn't. I'd downvote a song, and it would keep coming back with others soon afterwards. Frustrating.

That wasn't just you. We couldn't escape them or Hozier. Before that phase it was Meatloaf and, like, why? We could start a playlist with ANY song and it would end up pushing Google's sponsored artist within 10 songs.

Yeah that was a popular notion at the turn of the 20th century. Forced sterilization and/or euthanizing of the mentally ill. Then the more "humane" method of pacifying troublesome patients came in the form of lobotomy, or literally scrambling the patient's frontal lobe with an ice pick until they stopped fidgeting.

Someone bought someone else doughnuts. That someone else (like me) thinks Tim Hortons doughnuts suck and are not carb-worthy.

So they chucked them and left them for the wildlife or something and got some good doughnuts from elsewhere

There is also the possibility that there is a camera aimed at the doughnuts to see how people would react and to see if anyone would eat them

Nice. I’ll probably go with either the one from Haas or shop floor automations. I don’t think I’ll cheap out on a $50 eBay one. Probably try it on the old VF-3 first. It has to be better than holding the floppy and your mouth just right to get it to read. 😂

@Peter_Black That's OK. My worst commute was Parkdale to Markham, which isn't actually that far distance wise.

If I left at 6:30, I'd be there before 7. If I left at 7, I'd be there after 8.

Now I drive an hour each way but often don't even see another car on the road for the first 15 minutes.

      @EssExTee

There was an episode of "Penn and Teller: Bullshit" that discussed polygraphs.

Basically, they are a con. They way they "work" is that the machine is run, questions asked, then afterwards, before the subject has an opportunity to leave and irrespective of the "results", the "operator" tells the subject that the woo-woo box says that they were lying and that it would be best to admit it now.

In other words, it's all about manipulating the subject into an admission.

@cb “ Are they screwing with me? Was it a case of a white man who didn't know what he was seeing? Who knows.”

Little from columns A, little from column B. Pretty trippy either way. The natives still tuned in know a lot more about the deserts down here than I can ever hope to know. It’s always good to keep an open mind. Modern society is much less connected to the world than we like to recognize.

@cb Did I see you've got a new guy of your own now?

I was just about to say, I’ve got a few weeks until I can continue the tradition of asshole trainer.

We're going to hire an assistant for me later this year that I'll have to train up. They'll be plenty for them to learn on the hardware and software that's specific to flood warning. What will be interesting is if I get someone who isn't already a field critter. It'll be a whole another thing if I have to teach someone the whole not getting lost, not getting stuck and not unnecessarily beating up the truck stuff. For someone green, learning to work alone in remote places would have a learning curve.

It will be nice to eventually have some nights during monsoon season in which I don't have to pay attention to my phone when it does the things at 0300.

I won’t say certain people are wired to be willing to handle the 0300 hrs disaster phone call, but you know.

@cb I'd argue how much one needs snow tires and awd depends on what you see. For instance, here in my part of SW Ohio we got about 2 inches (5 cm) of snow Sunday night/Monday morning. That's not unusual, but happens infrequently enough that people forget how to not instantly crash when it happens. We rarely see more than 6 inches and when that happens almost everything shutsdown for a day while we clear the roads. Blowing and drifting is only a problem in specific rural locations. People don't really need more than good all-seasons with fwd for here.

What you have there looks a bit different..

@flatisflat I was an intern at a place that a year prior gutted their engineering department. They hired me as a contractor tech with a wink wink expect a promotion soon. I was then promoted to senior tech. they realised they had cut to the bone and were trying to rehire the department. I was on a group that was 5 people that was to balloon to 40. they brought me and two of other recent grads to interview people to fill up time. We literally went from new hire orientation, the day we were actually hired as engineers to interviewing our future managers and co workers. It was crazy.

@cb Could be in the city of Regina (known to plow a 36 inch high ridge of ice right onto the sidewalk, then fining citizens for not shovelling. We try to chase the city off our street as they only make it worse and the residents take care of it.)

@cb said in A welcome home gift:

      put it in my freezer.

My father's name is Charles, but he goes by Chuck. When my parents were first married, they didn't have much money. When there was a sale at the grocery store, they would buy in bulk. They usually got chuck since it was the cheapest meat. They would wrap it, mark it and put it in the freezer for later consumption.

One time, my father was away on a business trip. My parents had a nosy landlady who hadn't seen one of her tenants around for a while. While my mother was out, the landlady used her key to go into the apartment to snoop. She opened the freezer and saw packages marked "Chuck Shoulder", "Chuck Ribs" and "Ground Chuck".

When my mother got home, the police were waiting for her.

They eventually got my father on the phone and it was cleared. up.

"That's not my husband Chuck... it's the other Chuck... my missing neighbour... "

      😛

@highlander I just assumed that somebody said that the classroom should get a pet mouse, however, when she said "mouse", she spoke in a stereotypical central plains Canadian accent. The school district then got what she asked for.

@cb My wild life has improved since I planted food plots on fallow land and a swamp. It has transformed my place. The the trail cam proves it.

@cb First of all the car looks SO MUCH BETTER with those wheels. Still the best alltrack wheels I've seen.

Second, you're not alone. My mechanic has done a few free checkups and I insist on getting them donuts each time 😁

@cb I may or may not in fact be talking about a blue Tercel wagon that may or may not have a blue plaid interior.

I have the EGO cordless 18" bar chainsaw with 5 amp hour battery. It will cut almost an entire full sized maple on a charge. It has a 3600 rpm chain speed so it's just as fast as a gas saw too. It works for my camping needs.
